On Wednesday Nov 5th we received our new mission call. We did not open it at that time because we were having dinner with our kids on Friday night to celebrate the birthdays of Tammy and Jim.
Just as we were concluding dinner we gave Tammy her birthday presents. The last one I gave to her was the packet we received from the First Presidency. We let her open it! She neatly open the packet and pulled out the letter from the First Presidency and began reading. She STOPPED, put an exciting smile on her face and with her one and only expression "Holy _______ she read: "Elder Uzelac, you are hereby called to labor in the Philippines Cebu PEF Self Reliance Center as a PEF self-reliance missionary."
Everybody got so excited about this call and YES Jenee and I were not only surprised (thinking we would be going back to South Africa) but also excited about this opportunity to serve in the Philippines. We report to the MTC on February 16 to begin our service for 18 months.

Grand son arrived.
August 20th 2014 we finally got our grandson Alexander William Uzelac here and everything went better than expected. Alexander William Uzelac came in at 6 lb 9 oz - 18 inches long. He has black hair and looks like Sommer. As for the complications we were all worried about, it seems that our prayers have been answered. He was not born with Down Syndrome and his heart did not require immediate surgery at this time. He had to stay in the hospital for a couple of days until the flap dissolved in his heart. As for the hole they did not seem to feel it was an urgent issue and will check it in 6 months and then decide. He failed the hearing test but the audiologist said that is normal that it could just be fluid in the ears. They will check that weekly as we go forward.
Mother and baby are home and doing great in comparison to her last delivery.
No sooner than we felt good about everything, Jenee developed a bulging disk in her back which has put her down for several weeks. She had to have a MRI to detect the problem and was given a shot of cortisone and steroids directly into the back. She has been on bed rest until such time as the disk shrinks and the pain in relieved. So far medication and rest are helping as she is able to get around much better, but still is limited on her daily activities to rest and very limited movement. We are doing everything we can to negate surgery and pray daily that the Lord will bless her so there will be no medical issues to interfere with our plans to submit our application for our mission in 2015.
Some of our family and friends has received their mission calls which both makes us sad that we have had to delay ours but happy for them. Steve and Afton Baxter have been called to serve a PEF mission in London England. Paul and Bonnie Evensen have ben called to India to serve a Public Affairs mission. Alan and Janette Paine have been called to Ottawa Canada on a CES Mission. Kenton and Diane Knoor have been called San Diego to serve an Office and Medical mission.
Hopefully buy the end of September we will have our papers in once again and get a call shortly thereafter to who knows where.

Mission Postponed
After many hours and days or praying and pondering Jenee and I decided that we needed to cancel our mission call to Albany New York to be home when Travis and Sommer have their new little baby boy. So far things are going well with the pregnancy but the last ultrasound indicated that the baby has a hole in his heart that may or may not require surgery. Based upon that finding we felt most assuredly that we needed to her here this go around to help and support the kids.
I notified the Senior Missionary Department of our request with the hope that we will be ready to do this some time after the first of the year. We will need to resubmit our applications but our medical information is good for one year. Hopefully we can make that submission towards the end of 2014 and leave on our mission late spring 2015. It will really be up to Jenee and how she feels about everything.
We will make our request as to where we would like to go and what we would like to do once again. Perhaps a temple mission in London. Australia or New Zealand or a Self Initiative PEF calling to Africa Cape Town or Durban would be fine with us. We will see what the brethren and the Lord feels is best!

Elder & Sister Helser
Wednesday evening May 14th we Skyped Elder & Sister Helser the couple we will be replacing in Albany New York. We visited for a little over an hour talking about their mission call and the assignments they have been engaged in. This is their first mission. We had a video tour of the apartment that we would be living in for a year and was quite pleased with what we saw. They informed us of what we may or may not want or need to bring with us.
They spent some time talking about their teaching assignments in the Institute program, which from what they indicated is just teaching in the Albany 1st Branch on Tuesday morning and then on Thursday evening. The Albany 1st Branch is where we will be attending church and doing most of our teaching. From their description the Branch is surrounded by the Albany 1st Ward - sounds like an inner city Branch. The Stake handles the Institute program for the YSA's so from what I got we will not be teaching the YSA institute program - except upon request.
Early morning seminary is taught by a local member and we would only teach seminary when the teacher is absent or needs our help.
They seem to do a lot with the missionaries - attending district meetings, occasionally getting them to their appointments and shopping. We will most likely continue in that direction. We got the impression that the institute classes are very small so we will talk with the CES Supervisor to see what we can do to increase attendance to perhaps combine classes or perhaps join up with the Stake program. It sounded like there was some down time so I might check into the Self Initiative PEF program and see if they need help in the Self Employment Training like we did in South Africa.
They spent some time talking about their next mission to Africa. Elder Helser is an architect and has been asked to go to the DRC to help with a program where they teach members the building trade so they can work of building chapels. They were having some hesitations from what others had told them and I think our cautionary attitude about the DRC just about nailed it that they WOULD NOT want to accept that assignment.
They mentioned that they were in the Boston Temple District and have attended the temple several times. Our dear friends the Foote's are serving in Boston as S & I missionaries so hopefully we can arrange to meet them at the temple on one of our excursions to the Boston Temple while we are there.
We did find out that there is a YMCA just up the street ( in walking distance)from where we will be living and they accept the Silver Snickers card so we have a place to exercise, work out and swim. From what the Helser's said we would have some daily free time to go and exercise. That makes Jenee happy as she does her best to keep us both as healthy as possible.
We are still waiting to hear from the Mission President to see if he has any specific responsibilities he would like us to undertake. We really haven't done much in the way of getting packed but before long we will have to get serious about it. We just have things we want to accomplish with our kids and grand kids before we leave so they are taking the majority of our time and attention right now!

Made Contact with Leaders
After some effort we finally made contact with the Area CES Director and his assistant with whom we will be working with in New York. The Area CES director is Jeremiah Clark located in Washington DC and the Area Supervisor is Matthew Baker who is located in Syracuse. I spoke with Brother Clark and he recommended that I coordinate with Brother Baker as he will be our direct contact for our S&I mission service. I got hold of him and we spent a little time talking about what we would be doing but he asked that we contact Elder & Sister Helsher whom we will be replacing. We have made contact with the Helsher's on the Internet and have schedules to Skype with them this coming Wednesday evening and hopefully will have a much clearer picture as to our assignments as well as our accommodations, cost and what ever else we need to know. Time is moving forward so we hope we can get things in place. We have made our hotel arrangements for our 4 day trip back to New York. We will stop first in Aurora Colorado then to Lawrence Kansas, then on to Indianapolis Indiana, then to Buffallo finally ending up in Albany New York. We are taking 4 days to get there (500 miles per day) as the Church provides funds to cover our gas, hotel cost and food allowance per day. Brother Baker said to take our time and make sure we see some of the church sights on our way. We are planning to stop in Kirtland to see the temple for sure!
Received Our Call
March 13th we received our mission call to the New York Utica Mission as S&I Missionaries.
We had indicated that we wanted to go to the London Temple due to a phone call I received from the Temple Department wanting to know if I spoke Spanish as they needed a voluntary Assistant Recorded in a South America Temple. I do not speak Spanish but indicated that we would serve in another temple if available come September and they indicated a need in Boston, Washington and London. We indicated that we would love to go to London and they indicated they would look for our application and process it.
Well, after several weeks or not hearing anything I called the Senior Missionary Department and found that our application had been marked priority and sent to the Quorum of the Seventy for review. That was on a Monday. On Thursday morning I got a call from President Olsen indicating that the Missionary Department called him and wanted to know if we could increase our monthly allowance by $600. We indicated YES. He called the Missionary Department Back and gave them that information. On Friday I got a call from the Secretary of the Senior Missionary Department telling me that our calling was on President Monson's desk awaiting his signature. The following Wednesday we got our call.
We are very excited to be serving in New York and to be working with the YA's in teaching institute as well as other assignments that will come our way. We are looking forwarding to hearing from the missionaries we will be replacing as well as from the Misison President and the CES Director in the area.
